patiality has always been part and parcel of Canadian literature, however, it has gained new dimensions in recent years. I haven chosen five multicultural authors who engage themselves with the spatial representation of their country of origin in their own idiosyncratic ways. In the course of analyzing the works of Austin Clarke, Rohinton Mistry, Michael Ondaatje, Neil Bissoondath, and Nino Ricci my aim is to point out the importance of spatiality in the process of remembering their respective homelands: Barbados, India, Sri Lanka, Trinidad, and Italy. The authors have diverse racial, cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds; they write from different perspectives using alternative literary styles, genres and stances. What they share, however, is a pull of the past that is both a comforting and a destructive experience for them; they seem to need to look back in order to be able to glance ahead. I have found that in each work spaces creating places play a crucial role in the authors' relationship towards their country of origin. Here and there are now contaminated by memory-spaces in which each term (place) is marked by the absent other. This complexity around issues of space characterizes Canadian fiction of our moment and it promises to put pressure on Canadian national narratives for a long time to come.
