Fromet Mendelssohn, the wife of the most famous Jewish philosopher of the Enlightenment is practically un-known to the modern reader. With a tireless, indepth detective work, using documents, letters and other communications by her family and friends, Marianna D. Birnbaum presents us with the first biography of Fromet. Embedding Fromet’s story in the life of eighteenth-century Berlin, the author familiarizes us with the bustling capital of the Prussian kingdom, its rulers, its intellectual elite and its ordinary citizens at that fascinating junction of Prussia’s history. The author is Professor emerita of the University of California, Los Angeles. She frequently serves as Visiting Professor in the Medieval Program of the Central European University, in Budapest as well. Prof. Birnbaum’s research focuses on the literatures and cultures of Central Europe during the Renaissance and the Early Modern period. Her books and essays have been translated into several languages.
